Ashley and Silvia from the Washington State Employment Security Department will discuss the Paid Family and Medical Leave program, which allows workers in Washington to take the necessary time off to care for themselves and their families. The program is funded by both employees and many employers, and ensures partial wage replacement for up to 12 weeks, as needed, to welcome a child into the family, care for themselves or a loved one during a serious illness or injury, and for certain military-connected events.
    • Workplace Investigations (case study) – Kristin Nealey Meier
Rick and Kristin will demonstrate through a case study how to navigate the challenges of a typical sexual harassment complaint, investigation, conclusion and corrective action.
    • What We’re Hearing From our Clients: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions from HR Personnel Shannon Lawless
This session will cover the gamut of questions we hear most often from our clients, including how to deal with employees’ use of social media, how to accommodate disabilities, how to implement an effective mobile device policy, how to handle absences without running afoul of paid sick leave laws, and more.
    • Recent Developments in State & Federal Law – Hana Kern
In this presentation, Hana will review some of the employment decisions of federal and Washington state courts over the past year and discuss how they affect your business. Employers will come away with an up-to-date look at the latest developments in labor and employment law locally and across the U.S.
    • Best Practices in Hiring and Firing – Britenae Pierce
Today more than ever staying on the right side of the law with respect to hiring and firing employees is imperative for business success. Failure to follow the right process may lead to potential legal claims. This presentation will give employers the information they need to know and offer practical advice on how to properly hire and fire employees.
    • How to Be Successful in the Current Immigration Climate – Joel Paget
There continues to be a flurry of immigration activity from the current administration. This presentation will recap what you need to know about the travel ban, extreme vetting of visa applicants by the consulates and at airports, and the increase in enforcement visits at employer sites for I-9’s, H-1B, and L-1 visas.  Joel will also discuss the Notices of Actions to appear at Immigration Court after a denial of a petition/application, and the extensive delays in processing.
  • 4:00pm – 5:00pm: Cocktail Reception at The Halo Bar in The Sanctuary
